Gulf of Mexico Oil Spill Reported Near Plaquemines Parish

On Thursday, November 16, 2023, at 9:10 a.m. local time, the Third Coast Midstream Pipeline company reported a pipeline leak in the Gulf of Mexico near South West Pass in Plaquemines Parish.

According to the U.S. Coast Guard, an overflight by an aircrew with Main Pass Oil Gathering confirmed that the oil slick was initially 3 to 4 miles wide. A team of government and private specialists are currently working to contain the spill and investigate the cause and extent of the leak.

As the survivors of the 2010 BP oil spill remember all too well, every plant, animal, person, and business in the region of a spill may be at immediate risk—not to mention in danger of suffering long-term consequences that extend years or decades into the future.

Oil spills and the chemicals used to clean them cause significant harm to people, wildlife, the local ecosystem, and businesses, ranging from fishers, shrimpers, and oyster fishermen to men and women who make their livelihood through waterfront tourism. Those impacted by these spills have every right to seek accountability and compensation from the responsible companies.
